Hi everyone.I have a 79 F250 2wd with a 400,and i'm in the initial planning stages of a great truck.Obviously to have a great truck it needs to sound good,so my question is this-what is the best setup for dual exhaust that sounds mean yet not loud,is it available and is it expensive? I don't like glass packs as they seem to need replacing all the time.I'm hoping when all is said and done the engine will have a nice lope with 4bbl and headers.Just looking for suggestions.Thanks,John

My personal opinion is Straight pipes with a nice set of headers. If you have the exhaust end in front of your rear tires it is very loud, but if you straight pipe it clear to the bumper with some nice 4" x 18" tips it will have a really mean mellow tone and it will won't be real loud at idle, but it will when you crack it open. It's not to bad with the windows up and the radio on. You can hear it but ar not annoyed by it. So let sound nice and raw. Sure adds to the scariness factor of your truck. It says "yes i have a big engine and go ahead and try to pass me, i dare you"

I have headers and straight pipes on my truck, both pipes run out the passenger side, just behind the cab. It sounds really mean when it idles, and inside the cab, it's loud enough to hear, but not obnoxiously loud. I can easily drown it out with the pathetic radio I have.
