ive got a 93 f150 xlt efi 302. i noticed that my truck would surge a little bit while driving and the rpms would be all over the place then it would go back to normal (automatic trans).. so the other day im driving and i run out of gas... i call AAA they come and give me 2 gallons and a jump start cause my battery died while i was listening to the radio waiting for AAA to show up.... next morning i get up for school go to turn my truck on and it sounds like a turbo diesel! it keeps sucking in a crap load of air and puttering out and sometimes stalling completly if i punch the gas while its on i here a pop noice coming from what seems to be the drivers side headers or something on that side of the engine. then i noticed a purge valve that was on my truck that wasnt made for the year of my truck? haha so i have no clue whats going on someone told me fuel filter someone told me a bad fuse or relay and i just dont know what to think! please help i have no way to get to school and work until i fix this problem.
Just a shot in the dark, but was your truck running fine before you ran out of gas? I'm wondering if when you got down to the last little bit of fuel if maybe your fuel pump sucked in some dirt from the bottom of your tank and plugged the filter? It's a cheap experiment and won't hurt anything, especially if you haven't changed it in some time.
What do you mean by runing like a diesel? Is it behaving like it's starving for fuel? Running....kinda stalling...runnning....kinda stalling.... that sort of thing?
One thing, and I don't want to send you in this direction yet, (yea. I know you've got a 93) the manual for my 88 Ford says to avoid running out of fuel as this can damage the pump. I highly doubt you did that, but it's something to consider (although probobly the last thing).
ya! thats exactly whats its doing starving for fuel and it does exactly that runs kinda stalls runs then kinda stalls im gonna try to put some gas in the back tank to see if that pump runs better then i bought the fuel filter today
For some reason, I think your truck has two fuel pumps, one in each tank. I think it's only the pre '90s that have the silly three fuel pump system (two low pressure ones in the tank and a high pressure pump below the cab).
That will let you know if the one tank has issues with the pump for sure. But again, I really doubt you cooked the pump running out of gas once. It's not good for the pump, but with two tanks, I've done it far more than once with no issues, but I try hard not to!
If you haven't installed the filter yet, I'd really try that first. Kinda interested to hear how it turns out!
