Any flooring experts here?

I have a two story house built in 1968 with hard wood floors throughout. I purchased the house in 1998 and have only had the down stairs floors refinished.

So anyway, the entire upstairs is covered with carpet. All 4 bedrooms, hallway and the L shaped staircase.

Last weekend I decided to remove the carpet from the upstairs hallway and the staircase and refinish the wood. I'm also replacing all the natural wood finished balusters with factory white ones, sanding and refinishing the stair treads and refinishing the hand rail.

This is a pretty cool project that won't take too long or cost too much but will add some wow as you enter.

The stair treads and the end caps were fully carpeted and the carpet was wrapped around the end caps and stapled, over zealously too I might add.

Is it normal to staple carpet to the end caps? It's a gawd awful abuse of some very nice looking hard wood.

Now the real question.

After refinishing the hard woods, I intend to lay a runner in the hallway. I also want to carpet the center of each stair tread leaving the sides bare and the leaving the white toe kicks bare.

Is there a best way to accomplish this without further marring the wood?

The only other way you could secure the carpet is to glue it with contact cement.

I make, sell, distribute, install, hardwood flooring. unfortunately I don't have an answer for you since the stair guys take care of the carpet strip on the stairs.

I use an upholstery stapler when putting runners on the stairs. They do the least amount of damage if you want to refinish your steps later on.

Maybe they know where to have the cpt bound and buy a roll of pad near you. For pad I would get 1/2", 8 lb. Keep in touch buddy. I`m making linquisa and eggs manana. Oh btw my truck broke down leaving the job in Oakland today. No weight or shell on
so it was kinda light and took off down the on-ramp and tore apart my u-joints and yoke/flange. parts come tomorrow. Thank god for AAA.
