starter problems

I recently purchased a 1984 F-250 4wd 4 spd trans. I was informed that the engine had been replaced with a 77 lincoln OR Thunderbird 460. I have been having starter problems, and have replaced it and the solenoid, and ingition switch. The problems (grinding) continue. My question is how do I find out if the correct flywheel has been installed, and which one (with full specs) should be used. Is there a difference in the number of teeth, and angle? There are so many different starters for these engines, I'm a bit confused. Is there a serial number on the engine block, and if so, where? I have head numbers (03ve-a2a) but do not know if that will help. Thanks in advance!

Look up the starters & other parts on parts store Web sites (RockAuto Auto Parts is good) and
compare. There is no serial number on the engine. Starters are different for manual vs automatic
transmissions. T-birds & Lincolns didn't come with manual trannies, I'll bet you need the starter
for an automatic....
