I have a 54 F-250 that I am in the process of doing a Frame off Restoration on. I just took the engine out yesterday and now that it is on a stand and I can see it fully, I would like to know what kind of Engine I have.
The previous owners were the origional owners, and they donated to a charity auction house, which is where I got it from. the Auction house was "nice enough" to spray paint the entire engine Orange, to make it look nicer. Anyway, it runs well and I drove it off the lot. One of the Valve covers has a sticker on in that says "Power King 430". Other then that I have no other obvious markings.
How can I tell what size engine I have? Any help would be appreciated!
Some pictures, or at least, a better description, would help us to define it to an engine family, and from there we may be able to help you with size info. The only real clue you've given so far, is it may have more than one valve cover. Do you have reason to believe the engine is original, or transplanted/modified?
Photos have to be uploaded to, and linked from, a third party photo-hosting site, like flickr. If you give us a physical description of the engine, it will be helpful. As I said, the only clue you've shared, so far, is that it has valve covers. How do they attach? How many bolts? What style is the intake manifold? Sealed or open at the valley? I know you can help us better, so we can help you. ;-)
Sounds like a late-50's/early '60's 430 MEL engine -- or at least the valve covers!
Holy Cow. I hope not! It wouldn't be the first curve ball that I've been thrown on this truck though. There was a debate a while ago on whether or not I had the origional bed on the truck or not because the side rails had been pushed down flat.
I've posted picture now. I can post more if it helps. Now that I have it out and on the engine stand, i can take a picture of what ever you would like in order to make a good determination.
Shouldn't there be a serial number on the block or something to give us an idea of what it truly is, in case some one just put a different valve cover on?
perry, you might start this same thread on the engine (y-block) forum. There are a lot of knowlegable guys there that might not come to this very often.
Looks like part of that valve cover sticker is missing. The style of lettering used can cause some confusion when the bottoms are missing. The Power King was the OHV V8 used in trucks. I have never seen a 430 in a truck, and I have never heard of a 430 called a Power King. Most likely it is the 239.
