did i do something stupid

i have been told that i did the wrong thing bout a week ago on my 93 with 207K when the dealer replaced #6 lifters, push rods and rockers(750.00 total) a couple of people told me that i should have just rebuilt the engine cuz it has to be worn out. When they gave me the quote i thought ok so do i rebuild the engine for 4K plus OR spend 750 and fix what is broke now, needless to say i spent the 750 and it runs like it did before.

It all depends, what was the reason for replacing the lifers, push rods and rockers??

Do you have the old parts they replaced??

Sometimes putting new lifters on an old cam wipes the cam lobes out. I would of thought seriously hard about replacing the lifters, the rest isn't such a big deal.

ouch.750$ for what? a few parts and 1 hr's labor?
man.we could have walked you through doing that yourself Sam.
it's quite easy.all these things are just under the valve cover.
sad part is,they didn't fix anything and told you that the $750 was required to fix it.
this sounds like our local ford dealership.

Changing the lifters requires the intake and valley pan to be removed.

Likely the rocker broke and the shop replaced it, called it good. It'd would be pretty easy to tell if the engine was pulled down enough to change a lifter. Parts should be cleaned up, new gaskets visible, clean bolt heads.

93 = ASSUME - 7.3, 7.3's don't __typically__ break/twist rockers ... Thats why I have asked the OP why... However the OP's name is sams6.9 ...

I'm thinking he's been the target of a dishonest shop!

Yup, It would be rather obvious if lifters were replaced.

i saw it when they had it apart and yes i have the old parts. also i guess i should have clarified the 750 also included some other stuff that i had done to the beast. the only reason i use the dealer here is that they have the only IDI tech that i trust to fix things right. also i would have done it myself but working 80 plus hours a week i really didnt have time to really do it

Can you post an image (picture) of ALL the parts ... With as many of the wear surfaces as possible visible.

Apparently they didn't fix it right ... The question is why or what happened.

It helps to have the whole story. $750 is just a lot of money for what you said was done. You saw it torn down so they likely replaced what they said. You also had other things done to total the $750.

The next idea I would have is that the push tube bent (for whatever reason) or the lifter collapsed. Personally I've never seen a 6.9-7.3 lifter collapse but it could happen. You might get lucky and not have problems changing 1 lifter but it's not something I would normally do.
