I have a '98 EB Expedition (5.4, 3.73, towing package) and have plans to tow a 20' enclosed car trailer(3570#) and a 3200# car from Pennsylvania to Michigan (550mi). With two other guys and equipment I will be extremely close to the 13,000# GCWR. My question is this - is anybody out there towing that much with an Expy? If so, how has reliability been? Thanks!
Hello: Gregg from Ohio here, I want to answer your towing Question, I have had 2 Expys #1 :1998 EB.4x4 5.4L. 3.73 gear, 230 H.P.#2 (present unit) 2000 EB. 4x4 5.4 3.55 gear,260 H.P. Both units ordered with trailer towing package.I have been pulling a 24 foot 1998 Southwest Express enclosed trailer,3000 pounds area, I have 3 Ford show cars weighing in at 3500-4000 pounds (depends on which car). On the 1998 Unit it did fine for many miles no problems at all, But I must say it was a bit under powered, (down shifting into 2nd gear on slight incline) I ran this unit with pedal to the floor many miles to get up mountains, hills, etc. I traded at 60,000 miles running great with no trailering problems of any kind. Unit #2 2000 Expy 5.4 260 H.P. That 30 horsepower is really great!! This unit rarely ever kicks down into 2nd gear. at all when towing, never on inclines, just steep hills, very happy with this unit. both Expys had air suspendion,be sure to watch tongue weight,(placement of car in trailer) loading of the eqaulizer bars.(chain links),Also I would add aftermarket side mirriors. I know I am on the Limit, but the Expy will handle what you want to do. MAKE SURE YOU CAN HANDLE the DRIVING. Gregg M.
I have driven the Expy with the trailer itself before, the clip on mirrors are wonderful. Previously only with much lighter equipment though. If your on level ground do you use OD, or am I better leaving it off? Sounds like I should be in good shape.
