whats your budget? there is tons of info here on up grades for the 300 thats for sure I'm doing some work on mine right now and I have a thread called "A few more pony's please" which I have been told should add 100+ pony's when I'm all done, I have no budget so got all new parts cept a heated carb spacer.

junk yard can produce the same parts for alot less tho...

from what I have read here the head is the biggest air flow restriction on the 300 and a P&P can gain you alot.... took mine to the local shop that does all the race cars here and was told 50+ pony gain was no prob at $240 for the P&P

on page 2 of this forum there is a utube vid posted of a maverick with a turbo and stock head/block hit'n 10's on the strip

what ever you decide I hope all goes well for you

Lov I6's !

The very best engine I have ever owned was a 300 I6 bored just a bit over stock, after market intake and headers, holly 390 (i think it was), good rebuild and extra care in head rebuild (stock size valves). Hooked to a old 4 speed granny trans in a 65 FORD one ton SRW. Put a 10 1/2 foot camper in back and towed many full size vehicles behind it with NO PROBLEMS at all ! That thing would pull stumps and ask for more ! Give me low end torque over hi end horses anyday ! We may never have gotten there first but we always got there and home with a and a feeling afterwards !

My brother did. After rejetting and retiming, it was a great little package. The Pinto was a generation ahead of the cars it replaced - Falcon, Maverick, etc, - with rack and pinion steering, 4-spd trans, integral shift linkage, staged 2V carb, radial tires, McPherson strut front end, and other upgrades. Pity it got the bad rap from the tank/axle debacle. The original Kent 1.6L was used largely in Europe ( Anglia) and was the base engine for Formula Ford race cars and even got a Cosworth DOHC 4-valve head because it had a good enough bottom end to support large power upgrades.

The 1.6 Kent came in the original Fiesta, too. I so badly wanted to put a Formula Atlantic BDA head on the Kent block in my '80 Fiesta just to see how badly I could roast the tires...

I like ANY cross-flow.
(Toy 2.3 o r3 & a 2.7; Honda has 1 - these sm L i4s have DOHC as well, not too bad)
Isn't this ‘pinto motor' (also in later Rangers w/increas displacement and a nice “D” shaped port) still being made?
No car implant, just for kit cars, racers...

what’s the best from an i6 4.9 ?

on page 2 of this forum there is a utube vid posted of a maverick with a turbo and stock head/block hit'n 10's on the strip
what ever you decide I hope all goes well for you[/QUOTE]

probably Mad Mike’s Mav a local here. (also in Oct of...’18? AutoCrafter mag).
The best answ to OP’s Q is all ways to get more info. I answ the Q “What;s the best...?” with: "What Is The Application?”
st?, strip?, canyon carve, 2 lane, haul, tow, ?? etc, etc. Even having attepted to make that point I like:

“...advance my timing about 4 degrees...”
as 1st bite @ the apple. 4* past ford spec. A ign tune up followed by a carb tune up can all do wonders if done right. (Also on transmis if green dot’n late model stock = handel 500 HP, can B built to 750. A Transgo kit can up grade. No need for kevlar bands, etc, etc). DEPENDING on APPLICATION.
What is your use, final application, driving conditions, etc? More clarity = more specific answ.

“...low end torque over hi end horses...”
I built my lill bobtail (see avitar) this way
