EFI Exhaust...Again

Hi all,

Been lurking for a while for tips on improving the performance of my newly acquired '88 F150 4.9L 5-speed. The truck is still wearing what appears to be its original cats and O2 sensor. I'd like to follow AbandonedBronco's lead. The only problem is I need a cat w/ air tube. Does anyone know of a single, good flowing cat w/2.5" inlet/outlet and the AIR tube?

Also, has anyone tried a glasspack (CherryBomb). They seem like stupid fun and are cheap, but I am not looking for blatant obnoxious noise.

AbandonedBronco's Exhaust:

Converter Pipe (Manifolds to Cat): Walker 45166
2.5" in/out Catalytic converter: Walker 15038 (part # with AIR tube?)
2.5" in/out Dynomax turbo muffler: Walker 17788
2.5" Bronco mandrel bend tailpipe: Walker 45569 (will of course use different or dump in front of rear tire)

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Walker used to offer an add-on AIR tube kit. It was basicly a muffler clamp that had a piercing nipple on it, and you hook your existing AIR pipe into it. It was designed to be placed right in front of the cat.

Hope that helps.

AbandonedBronco has a great exhaust system. You would do well to mimic his.

A glasspack isn't going to be stupid loud on a 4.9L, by the way. These engines are naturally quiet. In order to really make some obnoxious noise, you have to kill the kitties.

Guess I'll start trying to contact some manufacturers. The Walker website is not very helpful unless you are looking for a direct fit (read expensive). Any other suggestions on manufacturers with good flowing universal cats?

That guy typed 'piercing nipple'...lol.

Thanks

There is a way to determine which cat is better but I don't know how. It has to do with how many honeycombs there are i every square inch. I have ran a high-flow magnaflw cat before and I liked it.

There are some less expensive, high-flow Cats in the Summit catalog.

First, thanks again for the replies. Though I will likely go with the Walker y-pipe, I can't get over how it is put together. With the abrupt junction/intersection from the manifold pipes to the crinkle/crush formed curves, it just looks like it flows terrible. I dug around the Magnaflow site and found this y-pipe and cat #93302.

Product Search Results - MagnaFlow Catalytic Converters by Car Sound

It is a work out art. Two problems, though: 1) 2.25" dia on the main pipe and cat; and 2) kind of pricey (MSRP >$400, common street price ~$240). I have found a source that is offering it for right about $200, which is better but not great.

The problem is the diameter. The Walker is 2.5" I believe, vs. 2.25" for the Magnaflow. But...the Magnaflow looks mandrel bent and smooth as silk.

So, I ask for opinions on the significance of the 2.5" bumpy-jumpy path vs. the 2.25" smooth, smooth, smooth pipe.

Thanks

I was hoping to read more about 'piercing nipples.' But anyway, moving right along....

Thanks for the bump, F-250 restorer. Any opinions on performance differences? If no one else has tried the Magnaflow pipe or wants to offer an opinion, I don't mind being the guinea pig and reporting back. Unfortunately, my comparison would be the 22 year old stock y-pipe and cat and this will only be one data point. Iplan to use it with a Cherry Bomb glass pack. What do you think for glasspack length: 8", 18", or 22"?

18 or 22 inches would be fine. I used a 32 inch glasspack before and didn't like it (too quiet). Also, use Thrush glasspacks. They have a larger inside diameter (2'').

Really it's like this. If you have cats, stay away from baffled mufflers. Glasspacks are your friend. If you DON'T have any cats, I find the 300 makes a nice sound with a good baffled muffler.

You can't go wrong with glasspack style mufflers in any case when it comes to the 300.

Here's a clip of mine.

Try summitracing.com. You can search for a catalytic converter, then choose all sorts of options, like number of inlets, number of outlets, size of inlet, size of outlet, with or without air tube, etc.

I just did a search for a cat with single 2.5" inlet and single 2.5" outlet, and an air tube. Got 18 results to choose from.
