I plan on putting a 9in in my 52 F-1 and was wondering if I find one from salvage yard what all do I need to get for it to fit? My understanding is that it is a direct bolt up if you get the correct year 57-72 F-100 right?
The 57-72 F-100 rear ends are the same overall width and have the same spring pad locations as your F-1. So it is a virtural direct bolt in, from that standpoint. Save whatever hardware you can keep from the donor vehicle. I used a 9" from a 68 or 69 and it had the shock mounts welded to it, and I was able to use them fine, along with the U bolt mounting plate. I did need longer U bolts because the spring stack is taller on the F-1 than the later model truck.
Ford offered a H/D 9" as an option in 1968/72 F100's. 1968/69's have 28 splined axleshafts, 1970/72's have 31 splined axleshafts.
Even though classified as a 9 inch, this rear axle has a 9 3/8" ring gear.
ONLY 5 parts are the same as a 9 inch: Housing gasket, 1 pinion bearing & race, pinion seal and the pilot bearing's retainer.
EVERYTHING else is different including the axle seals. Replacement parts for this rear axle can be difficult to find.
A similar version was used in Lincoln's & Mark's thru 1973. It was standard equipment in 1966/72 full sized Ford's and Merc's, T-Birds with 428 (1966/70) & 429 (1968/72) engines.
