Probaly a dumb question

So i've been noticing while checking my oil on my 390 motor that when i first pull the dipstick it shows full. Then when i put it back in to check it again it shows at add. But if i put it back in and let it in for 5 seconds or more it shows full again. So basically the faster i remove the dipstick the less oil i show? What reading do i go off of?

Well at least you have oil on the dipstick . What I personally do is grab a rag and pull the dipstick out and wipe the dipstick off then I put the dipstick back all the way in and pull out the stick. This should give you a good reading and you can repeat this process a couple of times and just average the readings you get and that should give you a good idea.

Are you leaking oil or burning oil really bad, is your dipstick all covered in burnt oil? What I did with my dipstick is I used a scotch-brite pad and cleaned her up real good. Make sure you throughly wipe the stick down after doing so and this should make it easier to read your dipstick etc....good luck!

My truck runs on *love*, no oil required...

I wipe, check, wipe, check, then take the reading I like best.

I forget who said it, but it's something like: "There's no such thing a dumb questions, only dumb people". Ask all the questions you like, 'cause I've probably asked dumber ones...

When the engine is shut off, the oil begins to drain and settle into the pan. As the oil drains, the level will slowly rise.... probably not significantly.

Best way to check.... is as in the previous post. Pull the stick and wipe with clean rag. Re-insert fully before reading your oil level.

Oil is splashed around the pan and stick during operation. This may give an odd reading on the first pull. Best to pull, wipe and re-insert...... then get a good reading.

Best time to get the most accurate reading is before you start the truck for the day (while parked on the level, of course). This is when it will read the highest. If you check just aftr shutting it off at the gas station, expect it to read a little below full. You're good as long as it's not below the 1 quart low mark.
