I looked at my boost line today and there is oil in the line and around it. My instrictor at diesel mechanic school said that my turbo could be leaking oil into aftercooler and valve guildes or rings could be bad. Does anyone else have oil in their's or is it a problem??
My parents had this problem on their '99. The hose to the intercooler actually blew off of the turbo and this is when I saw the oil in the tube. I cleaned it out and the build up outside of the hose, put it back together, and about six months later the same thing happened. The hose blew of and the build up was back. Never figured out what the problem was. They traded it in on a new 6 liter. Let me tell ya, that's one hell of a set up.
Unless you've got massive amounts of oil in there it is a normal part of a closed crankcase ventilation system. Unless you want to run a road draft tube (you'll have oil all over your driveway) or fab up some sort of catch tank for the blow by, you're probably just going to have to put up with it.
That oil you are seeing is vary comon in PSD's reason being is that the powerstroke motor has an internal venting system for the crank case
Cummins do not the vent under neith the truck,
there are a couple of things you can do to prevent this
1. is to run a bypass and have it vent to the back of the truck or underneith the truck is easy to do
Where the air horn is from the air box to the turbo there is a black plastic housing under that housing there is a short 90% rubber hose, remove that from the plastic housing and valve cover go to Home Depot and get a 5/8 pipe about 1 1/2 long aand some rubber house and 2 hose clamps Take the 90% rubber house and turn it to the rear of the truck attach the pipe to it with a hose clamp andf then attach the long rubber ose with the other hose clamp to it and run it under the truck this will prevent vapor running into you motor and innercooler
2.Make sure to plug off the opening on the plastic housing with a 5/8 or so rubber cover
THe oil thing around the innercooler pipe to the intake will also have oil around it too YOU DO NOT WANT OIL IN YOU INNERCOOLER,
If your turbo was going back you will be hearing a hard swooishing noise coming from it and it will be leaking under the turbo maininly on the exhaust side
The oil that you are seeing is coming directly from tha crank case breather, Leave it up to emisson to vent it back into the motor
If it's an excessive amount of oil, make sure you air cleaner is good. A plugged element will cause a vacuum on the clean air side which will pull oil past the shaft seals.
It is not leaking any oil there is just some oil in my line that goes to my boost gauge. It has been like that for a while though. I am going to take the intercooler pipes off today and see if any oil is in them.

This is normal for the PSD. There is a catch tank system to prevent excess oil from going into the intercooler. take a look at this site to read all about it. http://www.maesco.com and look under catch tanks. They have a good explanation on how it works. I have not done it to mine so far, but it seems like a prety good idea. The cool thing is it routes oil to a tank that can be emptied/cleaned instead of dumping it on the ground or under your truck. Good for the environment and your truck's underside.
