I know alot of people are asking how to install a factory tach into there trucks here. But my question is how simple would it to just add an aftermarket tach like sunpro or autometer or something along those. Never hooked up a tach to any of my vehicles car or truck.
It's pretty easy, just have to run one wire to the coil, then a couple wires to the fuse box then just mount it. I prefer to use an exsisting bolt in the a-pillar as that does not wreck anything and I find mounting on the column gets in the way.
If your truck has the duraspark ignition (all 83 or older, and some 83-86) it real easy. Most aftermarket tachs are wired with a red (hot when key is "on"), black (ground) yellow (dash lights or keyed hot for the light to work anytime the key is on) and green (coil). On the duraspark coil, there is a spot marked "Test/Tach", that's where the green would go.
Eh, one of my freinds is always saying I should be teaching auto repair. I keep telling him I have no paper saying i'm qualified to teach.......... That, and I don't have much experience with stuff newer than mid 80's.
I teach people around here to work on cars all the time, but that is easier then trying to figure something out by a posting. Sometimes I lose my patience though and just do it for them because they won't listen. I've had some experience with late 80's and newer stuff, but none of it has been pleasant. You do do a good job of explaining things though, I've tried giving you more rep, but it wants me to spread the love and I don't want to.
