ive been told my tie rods are bad and went to look up tie rod parts at the auto parts website only to discover there are many different types.... inner outer something about a pitman arm and steering arm and alot more..... which parts wear out and are commonly replaced? and some of them are listed with a 4200Lb Axle
i have a Dana/Spicer 50 i know that for sure the tie rods will complete my front end overhaul i just dont know which ones to get
if i were you i would just replace the whole shebang.to find out what you rated at the sticked inside your pass door will tell you what you need to know.oh and rock auto is probably going to be your best bet for parts as far as price wise.they ship pretty quick too
if he told you the tie rods are bad,he must of meant all of them, inner and outer.
they don't cost much each, but you should do them all at once and then you need to set an appointment for a front end alignment asap or you will ware your tires right off it (meanwhile hurting fuel economy too.)
this is where total $ for the job gets ya.
they are pretty easy to change yourself.
did he check the ball joints for ya?
if not, just jack up a front tire enough to put a large pry bar under it.lift the bar,and inspect for wheel slop up/down.if you see play here, look under it while someone lifts the bar,and see if its the top or bottom ball joint that's wore out.check the other side.
like tie rod ends, replace them in pairs.so if you have a bad upper, replace both uppers for example.
to inspect the tie rods yourself, grab the tire while its up and turn it side to side (as if your trying to steer the truck with your hands)
while looking at the tie rods, you will see the sloppy ones.you can tell by just having someone turn the wheel left/right while its ground too for this.you will see the play in 'em.replace in pairs.
we already did the ball joints bought the best we could get.... warranty is as long as i have the ticket if they go out take them off take them in and get a new set free of charge and then the next set is warrantied ha ha no more buying ball joints for me.... ive never messed with tie rods though
Get someone to rock the wheel back and forth, just barely moving the tires, while you look at each one individually, any slack means it is bad, you don't neccisarily have to replace them all, if they are good and tight.
