Power Guess...

Well i was asked the other day what I think my truck makes for Power, like the Horse kind, lol, and Torque. I didnt really care since its just a truck, But My truck is a 78 F-150 Ranger, 351M, '86 4 bbl. carb, Edelbrock Performer 400 intake, Steel tube high flow headers, True-Dual straight pipes, C6 trans....all the good stuff! So, what do YOU think im making? (Guess at the wheel horsepower)

if the cam timin has not been changed in any way, i doubt youre makin 150 HP and 200 lb/ft at the rear wheels. fix that timin and you can watch it jump about 100 points in both departments.

you have to remember your mods and "all the good stuff." you know what, youre right though, i was givin ya and optimistic number. youre probably closer to 110 or 120 at the rear wheels.

Oh boy, what is going on today?
You asked a question and maybe missed the part where he suggested that you were not making 150 Hp to the rear wheels?
Parasitic losses through the trans and t-case would kill some serious power.
Your factory numbers were based on engine power measured at the crank, not at the rear wheels as mentioned.
The 160 Hp was with a fresh engine, loss of compression, weak valve springs, and an otherwise tired engine might not be close to this.

Unless you have changed more than what you have listed, I would not have very high expectations.
I think "junior" as you called him was being reasonable, yet very optimistic. 150 hp at the tires could be just about right.

the 351M/400s came from the factory with 6 degrees of cam retard for stupid emissions reasons, that also landed the motors the tag of "boat anchor." by puttin an aftermarket timin kit, and ill emphasize NOT a stock replacement (that means go to crower or comp or lunati or i dont care...), it corrects this, and then you can say hello to an instant ~100 HP and lb/ft.

I dont want to start a huge war regarding the 335 series engine, I know this can strike some of the fellers the wrong way, but I can tell you that I recall a magazine article from some years back putting a Bronco on a dyno and coming up with about 100 HP.
Not long ago we took a 77.5 truck with a 351M and gave it all she had on a rear wheel dyno.
While we worked hard to blow it up, we only succeeded with a whopping 88 HP.
Yes, it was tired, and it had seen its better days, but this too had an aluminum intake, some headers, and a 4 BBl carb.
Again, this is not a poke at the 335, just playing the devils advocate here, and offering some insight, and experience with these things.
Ive got a buddy that runs a couple 400's and they run real well, though I poke at him a little and ask when he is going to build a 460????? For the sake of this thread, Ive got no opinion either way,,,,,,,,,this time. Lol.

lmao! i guess theres a first time for everything...

dont be discouraged by this though. the 335 series motors can be made into screamin beasts, and low-end grunt monsters, fairly inexpensively. but the "boat anchor" nickname did come about for a reason... thanks a bunch for your crappy de-tune ford!

and for the record: the cam timin change, alone, will put a 351M/400 within spittin distance of a stock 460.
