Charging problem

This morning shortly after start-up I noticed my battery light flicker a couple times. The gage was reading just a bit lower than it normally does for the first minute but it never jumped up to normal. Once I got on the freeway it eased up to a normal 13v for about 20 seconds and then slowly dropped to 10v for about 30 or 40 seconds. It continued to cycle like this for about 10 minutes of freeway driving. Once on side streets it stayed low and the battery light flickered occasionally.
My first thought of course is to replace the alternator but I thought I would run it by you guys and get your opinion on the odd cycling up and down.

Yep, sounds pretty typical of a dying alternator. But if the charging voltage is contingent on RPM, it might be worth your time to check the pulley and belt before you go buy a new alt.

Yep, that’s happened to me before. I had the tensioner pulley die on me and switching over to “Armstrong” steering without warning will scare the crap out of you.

Yeah, I know the feeling. One of my favorite mishaps ever is when i blew an upper radiator hose. I got a hose and put some water in the engine just to get it home. What I didn't think about was the 3 gallons of antifreeze on the front of my motor. So my powersteering and everything else was intermittent at best with the belts lubricated and slipping like crazy. Not having it at all, is better that it coming in and out randomly I assure you. I was lucky to make it home like that.
