I'm picking up some fender flares to night, what is the best way to attach the flares? i have read that they can hold water and dirt in them so i was thinking of putting some silicone on the to seal them to the truck, is this a good idea? does someone have there 2 cents to add would love that.
I believe they just install with either existing screws or some self tapping pan head screws. They should also have double sided tape where they contact the verticle parts of the body. If they are aleready used, you may have to get some new tape. If you use silicone, make sure to only use it on the top. If you seal all the way around it can(and most likely will) trap moisture behind it and rust out your fenders.
Mine had a tape that adhered to the edge of the flare itself, where it contacts the vehicle. The tape is like a U shaped channel. I can take pics up close and post them if you want.
they are used there ford factor flares, no tape just some rubber on the rim. i think i will just silicone on it.
thanks for info, will post pics when done.
I would NOT silicone them. Wash and wax your truck ,or at least the area where the flares will sit against the paint. Then put them on. With flares it a good Idea to pull them once a year or so and wash and rewax that area. One thing I would silicone is if you have to drill holes in your fender lips, give the screws a real generous coating of back rtv or some such sealant then screw them in. Every truck I have ever owned I put flares on and this has been my routine. Of course if they use road salt in your are I have no expwith that
I would not use silicone. It will eventually get moisture in it and lose adhesion. I would go to an auto parts store and get some double side adhesive tape.
Get some double sided tape and some push in clips or self tapping screws. When I put some factory flares on my 01, I had to drill out a few of the holes for the clips to fit, and I used a few self tapping screws here and there.
ok will have to pick up some tape, no salt here just looking to keep mud out of them to stop it form rusting. what is the push in clips you used, pic or part number please. also just wax last week but will do again to be safe.

You can just get whatever they have at the auto parts store when you get your tape. I used a type that has a screw in the middle, so you push in the clip and then tighten the screw. I don't have any pics or part number though.
The only thing you will need to do is drill out the holes a little, and probably drill a couple of holes as some of the holes already in the fender didn't line up with the flare.
I used it on a 65 Cadillac I was cleaning up to reseal the seams under the rear window. Turned out real nice and 10 years later it hasn't popped or shrank and is still slightly flexible.
