C6 Temp Sending Unit Port

C6 Temp Sending Unit Port
I'm installing a temperature guage in my '55 and I found a port in front of the band adjustment on the left side of my C6 that the sending unit screws into.
Does anyone know what this port is for and would it make for a good temperature reading?
