Kinda a long story but about two months ago I started to get a pop out of the carb going down the highway at a steady speed every now and then. Then shortly after at cruising speeds if you gave it gas the truck would kinda bog and shake. Thinking it was a carb problem I called Edelbrock to get advise and he told me to richen it up with a meter change. Bought the kit and started with the first stage, still there but better so I switched out to the second stage. Better yet but still there so finally switched to the largest metering rod and changed to the silver spring. Made a big difference in performace, could actually feel a seat of the pants difference but was sucking the fuel like no tomorrow. I went back with the original setup and now its back.
Spoke with a friend and he thought I might have a bad valve not seating and with the extra fuel was causing it to seat better that's why I didn't notice it as much. So I bought a compression tester and here are my results. First off this is a 79 F-100 2wd sb with a 302 and a 600 Edelbrock.
All cylinders on driver's side was right at 150 psi.
On the right side from front to back it goes 145,150,135, and 140.
Could that be my problem??
Now I went ahead and changed out the plugs to new ones and took it for a spin and the bog or hesitation is no longer there. So could all this be from a bad plug?? THey were not that old maybe 4K miles on them. # 25 Autolights.
No, compression is not the problem. They are well within 10%. Carburetor wasn't, either. Your timing is.
Do you know what it's suppose to be at? I'll go out and check it.. But then again I've been driving this truck for about a year and a half and never had any problems so how could the timing change? I replaced the chain when I first bought it.
Ya it's there, didn't think about that... Mine reads 8 BTDC. Now what is #1 cylinder? On Chevy it's the front driver's side so is Ford the same or is it on the passenger side??
