Oil cooler bad....

Ok folks so I will try to make a long story short. The truck is a 2006 f350 6.0 with about 62k km’s on it or about 38k miles. My ECT runs about 185 +/- 3-4 degrees and my EOT always ran about 2-3 degrees within the ECT. Last October I did an oil change and afterwards, I noticed the EOT running about 5-8 degrees hotter than before the oil change. A few weeks ago I pulled my 5th wheel which weighed about 12,000 lbs through some rolling hills and the EOT went as high as 23 degrees hotter. The ambient temperature was only about 45 degrees so not very warm at all. Last year going through the same hills I never had that high of a difference in much warmer weather.
<O
So after reading allot of threads, I believe an oil cooler is in the near future. Does anyone have any other ideas on what could have cause the EOT temp to spike like that after an oil change or is it just coincidence? I also plan on doing an EGR cooler delete from Liberator and adding a coolant filter while I am in there. Also I know some 06’s will throw a CEL after the EGR cooler delete mod. On a whim I unplugged the EGR valve and I did not get CEL but it did throw a code. Does this mean that I won’t get CEL if I delete the cooler? Thanks guys, I have learned so much about these trucks from you it gave me the confidence to do it myself.<O></O>

I do not see how an oil change could cause this. The oil cooler fails by plugging up the heat exchanger core on the coolant side. An oil change should not affect it.

One possibility is the oil change somehow dislodged sludge / gunk etc. that plugged the oil cooler somewhere.

I tend to agree, I cannot see how an oil change could cause it either I am thinking it is more of a coincidence.

Gearloose I was think that might have been a possibility also.

I used to be a tech but I have been out of the business for about ten years and I didn't work on diesels. With that experiance and what I have learned here I am leaning towards oil cooler, I guess I am just looking to get some of your thoughts to confirm my diagnosis. Thanks guys, anyone else?

I personally think that gunnar is one of the people that the lack of a coolant filter and the casting sand issue has finally caught up with. If the oil change was causing problems like this his injectors would already be toast.

when you pull the oil cooler out drain the oil out of the sump and check the screen under itgood chance it's broken also don't forget it will take 17 qts of oil to fill back up

I just went through similar experience when I replaced my Oil and EGR coolers with a Bulletproof kit from Neal Industries. After, I am still running 15+ degrees hotter on EOT than ECT. Also, am pushing vapor out degas bottle under load. Not much coolant loss though. About ready to re-torque ARP studs that were installed around 45,000 miles. Running out of options. Hope you have better luck.

Did you change type (dino or synthetic) and or oil weight?

If you went to a heavier oil for the summer, the temperature will rise slightly as in your case. Heavier oil circulates slower and retains more heat. Lighter weight oil will circulate faster and remove more heat.

I learned this little tid bit from David Cranitz at Royal Purple when I asked RP for a rcommendation of what oil to run in my ZO6. I was going to use 15W-40 RP but he recommended RP Racing 21 (5W-30) for the reason I explained above.

If your head gaskets have failed I personally don't think a re-torque will do you much good. If it does help I definitely would not stray far from home with it.

I would be for changing the oil filter again, it could have a restrictive defect, or it could have caught a bunch of crud that broke loose. At the minimum pull the filter and see if it looks ok.Check everything in the housing especially the bottom, looking for forein debris. Just seems to coincedental after an oil change.

I actually incurred a similar problem, about 4 weeks ago i changed my oil, same oil (valvoline premium blue) same filter (motocraft) that i always use. As soon as a changed my oil the truck started shutting down, then no-start condition. I pulled the oil pan and found a plugged up pickup screen, pick-up was also cracked, so i changed it. The truck ran, but not too good and still died. Ran the truck on a diagnostics computer and guaging the HPO and the gauge would drop to 0 and then the truck would die. 1 HPO pump and IPR later it was running fine. The next day i was driving down the freeway and smelled the distinct smell of hot hot coolant, but temp was normal. Put the truck in neutral and killed it, coasted to the shoulder, popped the hood and found milky creamy oil coolant boiling out of the degas bottle, cracked oil cooler. The only thing i can think of is increase in oil pressure after the pump replacemant and new oil cracked the cooler.

It was rather expensive but really helped me understand the way everything worked on the 6.0. It was the first time i really dug into it. Hope any of this can help...btw good time to delete your egr cooler...i did mine while i was already there.
