Kinda depends on the extent of the rebuild. Stock? Built-up? I had my 302 rebuilt (engine kit, engine parts, crank cored/balanced, heads rebuilt, bored .0040 over, and machine work, plus asssembling the engine, taking it out and putting it back in). It was over $2000.
Don't know if a 317 would be different cost-wise. Again, it depends on the extent of the rebuild I would imagine.
I agree....$2000 or so if you do not install the engine yourself. It seems that the installation is almost as much as the rebuild. But then again....it is not easy (timeconsuming) to install one.
But then again...look how much you learn by doing it yourself? Isn't that what life is about, being a life long learner?
Uh, I'd take that $2000 figure and add 50%. I've got a Lincoln 317 (essentially the same engine that's in your big truck) and had considered rebuilding it for my F-1 to have a unique powerplant. HA! Parts for these antiques are incredibly difficult to find. Kanter is the only place I could find anything. To give you an idea of what they wanted for there stuff, I distinctly remember a timing chain with NO GEARS being in the neighborhood of $50! It only got worse from there. I couldn't really find any other sources for parts, either. Good luck!
