well i went offroading in my 93 f150 this past weekend and yeah when i was cleaning my truck i crawled underneath and seen the breather for front differential was gone. so then i looked and seen their was fluid leaking out the side and i think it is from the diff. and it smells like diff. fluid. and now today i walked outside 2 days later and seen all the fluid on the ground. looks to me that i would have to take the I-beam front end off and stuff.
-is it hard to remove the front diff.? i it is really hard i am probably going to switch gears cause it got 3.08 open right now and i want to switch to maybe 3.55ls.
-for the breather tube what can i use to replace it? gas line? and after i replace it can i possibly just get a longer length and run the tube up into the engine compartment?
the axle really dsnt need to breathe it just needs room for the air inside to expand when it gets hotter.
having equal air pressure on bolth sides of the axle seals really helps keep shmoots out and oil in.
yeah cause all the fluid is on the drive way so i think it is an axel seal. but like you said all i have to do is take the axels off and just pop of the transfercase driveshaft and then just unbolt it from the i beam? i want to install 3.55ls so if i have to go through all of this work i mise well do it while i have it apart.
i heard that most v8 f150s were 3.55 and i would get that diff. i was at a junk yard and seen one for a f250 3.55ls and then i realised the housing was to big.
3.55's were very common in the V8 trucks and the front pumpkin from another F150 would be a direct swap into yours. To do the job the drivers side hub has to be dismantled so the drive axle can be removed, then disconnect the driveshaft and unbolt the diff from the TTB arm. The passenger side inner drive axle will come apart at the slip joint if you remove one of the clips over the rubber boot, the inner portion of this shaft with the center U-joint is C-clipped into the diff and can be removed after it is off the truck. 3.55's are a good ratio for the I6 as long as the tires aren't too big.
now if i decide to do the switch is their a way to rebuild the clutch packs for the LS? i dont want to spend the money on the gears and the clutch packs are shot.
