I have been doing work from my garage on powerstrokes. Well a guy wants my help and I hope to help him. He has a 2003 E350 Van with the 7.3 he said it will lose power when it goes up hills and after he has let it idle. He said that it also knocks when it loses power. He says that all the gauges read normal, and that there is no check engine light. What could it be? Hope you guys can help me, cause he is willing to pay to get it back up and running. Thanks Guys.
My vote is clogged screens in the mixing chamber. Drop the tank and do the in-tank mods for him.
You could probably test drive it to confirm the diagnosis. See how it acts under WOT, listen for injector knock from starved fuel, then see if it will clear up and idle fine.
Lucky for you that's one of the easier jobs on an E350. Speaking of easy jobs, while you've got it, pull the motor cover on the inside and check the up pipes for leaks. You'll never find an easier set of up pipes to fix unless you pull a motor.

What are the 'mixing chambers'. Thats a new one to me. Would it be like the screens clogged? And when its at WOT listen for injector knock.... my truck has injector knock but it goes away once it gets fuel (Just knocks at idle, been told thats normal) Please explain more, so I got an idea what I am doing (Learning process man) and I will check the up pipes if I have the time, its a delivery van.
Start with checking fuel pressure under load ,a quick check of the fuel level in the bowl when its acting up will tell you if its fuel related ..Fuel pumps are a pain to change on those , so hope the problem is in the tank ...
Well I assume the fuel pump would be simple to change on them cause its a 03 or 02 so I assume it has the on fram pump, and check the pressure ate the fuel bowl when its acting up. What should it be, 45 or so (If I remember right) and I will do that.

Yeah ,my bad , on the frame is easy , I was stuck on the OBS forum....When its acting up it may be as low as 10-20. Check the tank pickup first like Chris suggested
Well thing is if it has low fuel pressure are the bowl then I knwo to check the pick up, but what if it has good pressure? Whats good pressure? Like I said if I remember right its 45 PSI

If it has good fuel pressure , 45 is ok at idle . pressure will drop under load . Test it , let us know what you find . if its not fuel ,the rest is more involved ...If it is a fuel issue , most likely the bowl will not be full during the issue . Plugged cat can cause the same symptoms, more involved to test . If the bowl is full when it acts up, look at fuel as the issue . Pressure won't matter if it is empty ..Fuel filter can also be an issue at WOT...
WOT = Wide Open Throttle. Like Rick said, pressure at idle isn't what you're looking for. Get on the freeway and mash on the go pedal and see what the fuel pressure does.
The mixing chamber is the white plastic container on the fuel pick up inside the tank.
Here's what it looks like with the outer housing taken off. See the 2 screens inside?
Here's what they can look like when they're causing the issues you're describing
Thank you a million Chris, I really appreciate your help, I dont think I would do the mod, but I know what to look for and how can I check fuel pressure while I am driving the van? Also what should the pressure be at WOT?
45 is supposedly min. The real key is to watch what it is at idle and see how much it drops off at WOT. If the pressure drop causes the onset of problems, you've got a fuel restriction.
If that's the problem, you can remove and clean the screens, or like the mod does, eliminate them. If you eliminate them, you'll need to add some sort of simple filter between the tank and pump to catch the big stuff.
If you want to just clean the screens and re-assemble, be sure to show the guy the cost of a new fuel pick up assembly first. Then tell him you can clean it. You'll look like a hero.
