I've got a 87 4x4 F150 302 with the TOD tranny. I was thinking about swapping trannys for something thats geared lower. I need the lower gearing for towing. I've got the 8.8 rear with 3.55 gears. I want to know what trannys I can swap to without major modifications. I was thinking about something with the granny gear. All opinions appreciated. Thanks.
The only manual OD with a true granny 1st is the ZF S5-42, and it's EXTREMELY expen$ive and hard-to find (especially 4WD)because it's so popular. It was offered in '87, so it'll be fairly easy to bolt in, but plan on spending $800-1200.
Any full-size Ford truck transmission from '80-96 from a 4.9L, 5.0L, or 5.8L will fit and bolt up in place of your current one, but there were minor variations in clutch linkage, shifter location, t-case linkage, overall length, and crossmember location. You may have to move your crossmember, cut your floor or change the adapter plate, and cut your driveshafts.
