I have read a couple of threads about exhaust systems. I have a 2002 F350 and am considering removing the muffler. I figure if I don’t like the sound I can then put the muffler back. My question is does anyone know if the truck will go through NJ inspection without a muffler, I know the use a mirror and look under the vehicle.

If you want to know what I'll sound like before yoiu do it, check out http://webpages.charter.net/jimtjr1116/mainframe.htm . It has a sound clip or two of a straight piped PSD. I'm not a big fan of that sound myself, but I love the deep rumble of my exhaust system.

Thanks for the sound clip. I think it's one of those things I'll have hear in person to see what I really think. I figure for 50 bucks I probably could get it removed, but I'm still not sure about inspection ramifications.

Your state inspection procedures would obviously differ from here in Washington, but I was concerned prior to getting my truck tested for emissions about the absence of a "cat". I was hoping it wouldn't requre me to register my truck outside the Greater Seattle area, where rigs aren't required to be tested. It turned out that the testing procedures here are that they're looking for visible smoke. There's no visual inspection under the truck, so there's nothing to worry about. BTW, mine doesn't sound stock, or look stock, so if they were suspicious, they had a prime suspect of emissions violations in their grasp, and didn't care.
Check with someone else in your state that has had to go through emissions testing to be sure.
