Hi i have a 78 F-150 Ranger with a 351m and a C6 trans, with i think a NP205 (Part time? 4Lo, N, 2Hi, 4Hi) transfer case. When i drive my truck, its already screaming down the road at 60mph, and i wanna be able to drive it down the freeway and not blow it up (at like 2-2500rpm) at 70- 75, So what do you think the best way to do that is? Change both differential gears? Or swap in a e4od trans? If i must resort to a tranny swap i would prefer to swap in another auto (yes i can drive a stick) trans so i can still use the same pedal hanger. Thanks!
What gears do you have now? What size tire? What rpm are you currently at when you drive down the highway? Gear swap is by far the cheapest and easiest when compared to swapping in an overdrive automatic. Even swapping in a same era stick isnt going to help because most are 1:1 in high gear. Putting a little taller tire is going to help some.
Thats the thing, the truck doesnt have a tach, and the front axle is a Dana 44 and thats all i can tell you, I believe the rear is a Ford 9 inch (how do you tell?) so i would say it has at least 4.11 gears in it. Right now it has 32" Dunlop Radial Mud Rovers all the way around, but since i dont have a tach i couldnt tell you what rpm it was at, i know for a fact i would D**m near blow it up if i tried to do 70mph in it. It was already screaming down the road at 55-60mph on the way home, so i would say about 3k rpm if not more. I would like to be doing ~1800rpm < ~2400rpm at 70mph. Also, do you know what is the lowest possible ring and pinion ratio is available? If so, how much and where would i buy them at? Thanks for your input!
