I recently purchased a 2003 X V10. Took in for state inspection (Maryland) and they failed it for the exhaust. The PO removed the entire stock system and put on dual exhaust with flowmasters and aftermarkets cats which exits in front of the rear tires. The inspector said that the exhaust has to exit after the rear tires. I took it by a muffler shop to see what they could do and the guy there said he could change it to exit after the rear tires, but I might still have an issue with a missing oxygen sensor. I'm not getting a CEL and I can't find where it might have been disconnected from. I just scanned it and the readiness monitor is incomplete (not sure if this is due to recently disconnecting the battery). MD sends out a emissions test letter soon after you purchase a vehicle and this could be a problem.
My questions; is there a downstream O2 sensor and if it's disconnected (or missing), why no CEL?
Will the readiness monitors complete if there is a disconnected O2 sensor?
The Excursion/F250 platform is heavier than the emissions standards of the time. No downstream was required on our vehicles. I don't know how your state laws are, but ask the inspector to check the vehicles weight before saying it needs downstreams.
Thanks for the info, that's good news. I was worried I would pay to have the exhaust re-routed out the back only to find out later I would have to re-install the original cat. I do appreciate it!
Had the exhaust reworked. Now exits behind the tire. I really like the way it came out. Slightly quieter inside and tucked up nicely. It was hanging down too low before. In the end I'm glad I had it done.
