Yes I know, there were no factory 460 powered 4X4's in '73-'79. Did Ford ever give a reason why? GM did basically the same thing, there were no factory Big Blocks in 4X4's until 1981. GM's reason was too much weight on the Dana 44 or Corporate 10 bolt front axle.
My guess would be some government or insurance regulation either preventing them or making it unprofitable, orrrrr possible lack of demand due to the oil embargoes.
460 was used mainly in the camper special. Or as a special order option.
In the 4 X 4s, I think they mainly used the 351/400, for a number of reasons. Nothing really had to be changed. They were able to use the same oil pan as most cars. As well, around the early to mid 70s, ford became more pollution wise. Or so they thought, with their ummm.. emission control devices. EGR canister, air pump, etc.
