got a new shift motor today and before i bolted it on i plugged it in and tested it when you turn to 4x4 high it would spin over and the 4x4 light would come on turn to off it would go off over and over again so i was quite pleased.. but when i botled it to the transfer case and turn the switch you can here it turn into 4x4 and then without moving the switch it turns back out on its own and then it will repeat the cycle three times then it wont do anything untill you turn the key off and back on... anyone know what i should do
That's odd. I've had what you described happen to me when I tried to shift to 4WD while not moving.
When the 4WD control module tries to shift the transfer case, if it doesn't get the indicator back from the encoder switch, it reverses the shift and tries again. Up to 3 times.
The only thing I can say is either something in the transfer case is preventing the shift from completing, or something in the switch or switch wiring is not getting the information back to the computer.
I think the first thing I'd do is to check the plugs on the switch motor and make sure you've got nice clean contacts and that the plug is firmly seated.
After that, you might try shifting the t-case manually. I've never tried this but I've heard that you can turn the shaft with the shift motor removed and engage the t-case. The only indication you'd have that it did indeed shift is the front driveline would be engaged.
