Well i really was planning on doing an engine swap but you guys make some really convincing points. I might have too look at building it up and just cuz im a nut for turbos( diesel guy at heart) is there any aftermarket kits or some way to put a different putting a turbo on it at all? I know its a bumb idea but i like to be orginal.
hello iam doing a build up on 1973f250 what i have read is if you what brute power its betwean a fe390 or 460 iam looking at rockwell axels an between 11 or 12inch of lift riding on 48inch tire at 15wide but that,s me i have gone through my 390 from top to bottom an its getting a blower. now i have friend that did a 400 from top to bottom he loves it good
Just pulled a 351M out of my '78 F100, and dropped a 351W (freshly rebuilt with a rebuilt C6 attached)....Mounts were way different, but stopped by O'Reilly's purchased some 302 mounts for $7.00 each, kept the perches from the 351M, she sat down in there like she was made for it...actually finished today...working out some electrical hickups, hope to have her on the road this weekend. Definitely more power (if it goes like she did when I drove it home in the 85 Club Wagon XL)...just a few modifications here and there, but nothing major...IMO...
Youre right. its the best engine on earth. And I have one running fantastically I will sell you very reasonably, with a smooth shifting C4 behind it.
All I'm saying is that the definition of a "good" engine entirely depends on your usage. If you don't like it, that's fine. Apologies for trying to give the OP some pros and cons rather than all cons.

At least one guy on here has put a turbo on his fuel injected 300. I think it came off of a 5.4L duramax but I could be wrong. Seems like it should be easier on a carb.
For a carb all you need to do is jet it correctly, get a timing unit that will retard the timing on boost (msd), and get a carb hat. Theorectically the carb will self meter the fuel to match the boost. realistically if youre running a decent bit of boost you might want a rising rate fuel pressure regulator.
I'd say a stock diesel turbo would probably be a decent start for a performance set up on a 300.
I like turbos too... but for what its worth, if you turbo a v8 you'll make even more power.

I just realized that I have one I will be selling shortly thats running just fine.

(mwuahahahahaha)
Generally that's all about displacement and how much air you can cram into the cylinders. A 300 cubic inch engine is by and large a 300 cubic inch engine. So you might not make a bit more power out of a forced induction 302 than you do with a 300 straight six, and you'll certainly make less torque. Now say if you wanted to do a forced induction 460........
A friend of mine has a 2.1L 4-cyl that, thanks to it's turbo, makes as much horsepower as my 5.7L v-8 in my Corvette. It's really disgusting, but at the same time I know that if I put a turbo or supercharger on my Vette, he'd be screwed. He does NOT make as much torque though, so the seat of your pants feel of his car is much less intense. Also, because he makes that much power, he doesn't get any more mileage out of the 4 banger than I do out of my v8 and it wasn't a bit cheaper to build. His engine makes 300+ hp with all forged interals, mine is stock. Different means to an end is all it is.

So I'm all about talkin it up.
YEAAAH go 300! wooooooo! Do I hear $350???
I know a guy in Georgia would would probably love to have it, but he's broke and already has a 351 that he's trying to build up. If yours is running though.... I'll let him know.
12 years ago I went through this same argument in my head. "I dont want this silly six cylinder under my hood." so I pulled her and dropped her in the weeds next to the barn. Then I robbed a windsor outta' a Montego. Had a flywheel shipped in from somewhere, I dont remember. stole a clutch from my brother. radiator from my other driver that had a bad rear end. frame perches from a 78 Bronco. exhaust fab, upper and lower hoses and motor mounts. bingo she's a runner. sold the 300 8 months later, she was laying on her side ports up and full of water. The old guy bolted it in his truck and never heard about it again. his kid still drives it to school. My point is, I shoulda never convinced myself to pull it. I miss that motor low end torque was my friend
From what I have been able to tell, it's usually a love / hate thing. Most people who have V-8's hate the I6 even though they've never owned one. Most people who have the I6 love it either while they have it, or after they get rid of it.
My friend works for a drilling company and they run 300 6 cyls on all their rigs to bail water and run pumps. They convert them to run on propane and they run 24 hours a day and they last for YEARS.
Yes, I don't like the one in my truck, and it doesn't have enough power for the tires I have planned.
But for longevity and cheapness they are hard to beat.

Just depends on what your priorities are.
Yep, concrete pumpers out here love them and ****** them up, just depends on your needs and uses.
My 66 F250 I pulled the tired 352 out and dropped in my 300 .030/w offy 4bbl and Holley 390, Hedmann dual outlet headers,,,, on the scales with trailer I was 12,280 (with my 200lbs inside) and it pulled it great, you can lug the inline 6 engine where a V8 due to its power overlap would need to be downshifted because it would be buckin so bad. I even paid the few extra bucks and had mine balanced,,, not that they need it, but for longevity sakes, and I had er wound up a few times and she just hummed along. I have a friend who has a turbo off a 86 T-bird,,, and a pipe bender,,,, we have been kicken it around. Just a few pounds of boost would do wonders,,
I dunno I've rode in several heavy duties with newer EFI 300's (which make more power than the carb'd one) towing trailers and such and they are absolute pigs.
I'm not saying they won't do it. But they won't do it fast.
