The TECA if I got that acronym right (Transmission Electric Control Assembly) needs a signal from the VSS, TPS and Tach pickup to function correctly.

How fast is the vehicle moving, how hard are you pushing on the throttle and how fast is the engine reving are all critical information to determine the proper gear for the transmission to be in.

Usually the loss of any one of the above signals with send your transmission into limp mode with the overdrive light flashing and an odd eratic shift schedule.
Extended driving in limp mode will kill the transmission, so if you have those symptoms, best park it till they are corrected.
