Harmonic Balancer question

My 1979 F-100 Custom 300/6 manual trans has a vibration. I replaced the u-joints and got rid of most of it, but there is still a speed-dependent vibration there. If I push in the clutch and coast, the vehicle is smooth as silk at any speed, so I'm pretty sure it's a drive-line issue.

I thought about replacing the harmonic balancer, as it is the original and I've heard they wear out, but I'm not real clear on that. Apparently I don't understand the construction of the thing, because I thought there was nothing about it that could wear out.

Could any of you educate me on this issue?

V. dampeners are three sections: The metal slips over the crank, a layer of rubber/synthetic material, and the another 'ring' of steel, on which are the timing marks. Sometimes the aged rubber allows the outer ring to move, throwing off the timing marks. That is why mechanics who regularly work on 'classic' vehicles often use a vacuum guage to adjust the timing, rather than a light.

If I were you, I would drop the entire drive shaft(s), and have them checked for balance, all together. I am willing to wager that is where the vibe is coming from.
