Long story short, after subtracting the GVW of my Excursion with full tank of diesel and all passengers, I'm left with approximately 700 lbs. of carrying capacity on the suspension. (9200 lb. GVWR - 8500 GVW including diesel and passengers = 700 lbs. CCC)
Well, we're looking to purchase a new travel trailer to replace our current Cherokee, but with every travel trailer model that's preferable to us the hitch weight when the trailer is fully loaded (10-15% of the GVW of the loaded trailer) will be anywhere from 1200-1500 lbs, which will overload the GVWR of my X by anywhere from 500-800 lbs.
So, what are my options as far as suspension upgrades go? I'm running a full stock suspension right now.
With my all factory suspension, I have carried 6000 pounds on a trailer no problem! Towing ability is totally different than the carrying capacity. There are great upgrades for all around use...
V code Ford Leaf Springs in the Front
B code Ford Springs Modified Rear Leaf Springs
Bilstein Shocks
Adjustable Track Bar
Rear Sway Bar from the F350
Steering Stabilizer upgrade
But others will chime in with much more info! Do a little research here...lots to glean, I'm in the middle of my upgrade right now!
