A buddy of mine got a 89 f150 with a 3spd auto, he changed the fluid and filter, he messed up the gasket and blew all the fluid out on the free way, he redid the gasket filled and made sure the trans was full, now in any gear the truck wont go, if you give it gas up to 5,000rpm then you can get upto 5mph, i think he over heated the tranny and killed it, any help would be great thanks
but shouldnt it have refilled when it started up, and if not to refill it would we have to pull the tranny, i know you usually fill the torqeconverter before youreinstall the trans
I believe you would have to pull the tranny to fill the torque converter.
It may have filled up while driving, but that would then leave thetranny low on fluid.
Another thing that has been mentioned in another thread is maybe the filter fell or wasn't seated right. There is an O ring (I think from old filter) in there that has to be removed before the new filter is installed.
ok well heres a play by play we drop the trans pan and let drain, the filter was a large
6"x6" screen with 9 bolts holding it, didnt come across any orings, fyi this is a 3spd auto no overdrive. i watched him replace the filter put on the gasket and tightn the bolts, well when he put on the gasket he managed to push a portion of the gasket into the pan so when he tighten the pan bolts it was metal on metal, i then added 3 quarts and fired up the truck then topped off the trans he drove it around no leaks and shifted great all was well, he then drove home and got on the free way he lives 20min from me, he said after 10min on the freeway it started slipping like it was trying to go into nuatral, he got home and it was dumping trans fluid. he redid the gasket and refilled it and tried to go around the block but didnt get far, he re cheacked the trand and it was still in the cross hatches. thanks for the help
