overheating problem

my dads has a 1990 f250 with a 302. the problem is that it overheats but isnt losing any water that we can tell. we tried putting a different gauge on it thinking the gauge was wrong but it will get just above 190 then go back down. it does that a couple times then it will just keep climbing and i shut is off when it get just above 210. thought someone on here might have had the same trouble or know of something to try. thanks

Thermostat? Fan working? Radiator clean?

I have a car that was overheating and I could see any physical water loss but it was low and I knew it was going somewhere. I pressure tested it and the brand new water pump had a problem and it was pissing out coolant. Have you tried looking for leaks with it pressurized? (engine running or with pressure tester)

we tried a different radiator and it didnt help, and i think the thermosthat is good because you can watch the gauge get to 190 then go back down a couple times. how do you tell if the clutch fan is working right? when it stops raining i will try running it and see if it is leaking water anywhere

I would be inclined to take the thermostat out and test it. Suspend it (with a length of fine wire) in a pan of water and bring the water to the boil. You should see the thermostat open just before the water boils if it is good. If it does not open at all or not untill the water is boiling or only opens a little then replace it.
As for the fan, with engine off, grab one of the fan blades and push it back and forward. there should be no movement. Now rotate the fan, there should be some resistance. The fan should not spin freely. If it does then the fan clutch is bad. Also when the truck starts to overheat, if the fan clutch is good, you should hear the fan start to make a loud roaring sound.
Make sure you check that the fan drive belt is good.
