Exclamation Help! engine compartment fuel filter cap broken!

Hi guys I dont know how to get pictures in here but I'll describe it best I can, I went to do fuel filters today and went to do the engine comp. one first and grabbed my 1/2" socket and stuck it in and tried to loosen the cap and then saw that each of the corners were cracked when I pulled out the 1/2" socket one of the sides fell off.... how the hell can I get this thing off all the corners are so brittle and its not giving in to loosening up someone please give me an idea thanks!

First if it's not leaking right now leave it alone till you get a new one. Once you have a new one use a chisle and hammer. You can get the old one off like that. Then get the right size scoket for that cap and don't use a 1/2 drive end that will keep you from breaking it in the future

Did the same thing. Used a screw driver and a hammer to spin it off. The caps are expensive look at $40+

Just put it on the edge of the cap facing an angle that the cap screws off at. Then tap with a hammer to unscrew cap.

If I under stand what you are saying is that you are wondering if the rail filter is OE or aftermarket. And if it is aftermarket then does it have the cap attached to the filter. The OE does not. Dont have an answer for you, Id just take it off and see. Use a 36mm shallow socket to take it off. And some one does make a special tool to take it off if you want to spend the money, and if its a 4X4 it will make it harder to remove. I just used a 36mm shallow socket. Be warned it can be a PIA to remove. Dont forget the new o ring.

And if you would put your trucks info/mods in your sig it may help us help you out better in the future. Just FYI

You have to have 26 posts before you'll see the option to add a signature.

Also, you might want to give a strap wrench a try before you go to hammering on that cap....I'd only do that as a last resort.

good idea but what could I wrap it around on? hitting it with the hammer worries me as something could unhook around the housing or something of that matter

I thought it took a 24mm or 15/16 inch socket.
