Ranger Auto Hubs

Well to start off, I am a Toyota guy. I am just getting back into the ranger scene. My new 1996 ranger 4x4 has auto hubs. In the toyota world auto hubs are a bad word. Are the ranger auto hubs good? Are they worth switching to manual hubs? Do they come unlocked when you get stuck the like Toyota auto hubs? How do they work? Lots of questions but any help would be great!

well when the auto hubs work, they are fine, but most of the time you dont know if you have a problem hub until you are in a bad spot. i had auto hubs that didnt always engage correctly, i swapped them out for mile markers and it has been a big improvement. plus for those situations where you wish to back a trailer and you want low range for the gear reduction but dont really need to be in 4wd you have that option. i piad 180 for the hubs at autozone, you will also need new spindle nuts, the auto hubs use a different spindle nut setup, the parts store wants about 50 bucks for the spindle nut set or you could pick up what you need from a junkyard. the worst thing about the auto hubs is that when you change direction the hubs will unlock then re engage. seems like you would be jolting the front driveline alot. u-joints tend to not like that. manual hubs are a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. here is some more stuff to read concerning ranger hubs.
