My truck came from a 100+ deg F area & had had a 19", 7-blade fan with a severe-duty clutch & new radiator fitted to keep it cool; also a low temp thermostat which I changed for a 195 deg one.
I'm in a cool area & the fan is sucking up around 35hp & gas I could use - & making a lot of noise too. I don't think it's faulty, but even in the free-wheel mode the clutch still drives fairly strong.
As an experiment, I took the fan & clutch off this week & ran without them - the difference was dramatic, & no cooling problems at all, as long as I wasn't sitting still.
Extra quiet & the truck felt light - I found myself constantly having to ease off the gas.
So I have bought a standard duty clutch, but I need to know the diameter of the stock, 5-blade, non-a/c fan for the 351W (83 F250), to get a replacement, if any one can help.
The fan has to fit the fan shroud. I am assuming the fan you took off fit the shroud close around the edge, so you will have to keep the same diameter, just get one with fewer blades. If you get a smaller fan, it will leak air around the edges and not work as well around town.
