My cruise control has been wonky for years. When I want to set a speed and push the set/accel button on the steering wheel it will often go to accel and will not set. I'm thinking that the circuit board behind the wheel is at fault but the local dealer can't supply the boards because the truck is 20 years old.
I thought one of Fords claims to fame was more trucks still on the road than any other manufacturer, or that's what I told the partsman anyway.
I like the cruise as I can tend to get a heavy foot on longer drives. Any ideas for suppliers?
Although I have never had the steering wheel/switches apart, my guess is 21 years of dirt/moisture have caused the switch contacts to corrode or dirt has built up on them causing a bad connection.
It may be possible to clean them and get it working again.
Without looking at the schematics, I think it would be easy to build a set of switches to control the cruise, but I may be wrong.
I would be just as happy if my switches were on the dash since the brake pedal deactivates the cruise when you touch it.
I've been thinking about rewiring for different switches if the stock setup is not available. 'Set' is the only circuit I use anyway. I'm not always sure that partsmen try too hard. It's easy to just say it's too old. I've had the same problem with my dozer and skidder, only to come across a more knowledgeable or persistent partsman who found what I needed.
After 10 years they can and do discontinue parts, but they have the ability to find out where one is laying in the shelf if they want to. Try ed the parts guy, I know he has gotten obsolete parts for members before.
