transfercase issue

transfercase issue
I got a 92 f-350 with the 5 speed in it. My problem is that the transfer case wont go into 4 wheel low. I can pull the lever back into 4 wheel high but then I cant get it to push down to hit the neutral point to pull it back to 4 wheel low. One of my buddies said that the lever needs to be adjusted maybe but I don't see how to do it. Any ideas on what could be wrong with it?

The lever needs to be lubed up.It moves threw a sleeve type thing that allows a roll pin threw the lever to clear the mounting bracket on the transfer case, when you push the lever down to engauge 4 low. The lever gets sticky where it goes threw the sleve, and it won't travel.

Do I have to take it apart to do it or I can I just do it with the whole thing together?
On mine the manual and the diagram on the lever says to pull it back for 4h then push it down for neutral and keep pulling back for 4l
