Okay I live in the great state of California! The 360 in my 76 project 4x4 shortbox is blowing smoke and oil... sparkplug are black with oil and crust. I need to rebuild or replace the motor. It hard to find a 360 so I think rebuilding is the only way to stay within the smog zone....

Make sure to put sleeves in. Pretty sure it shouldnt be bored out. You should consider getting a different crank and rods and making it a 390.
sleeves!?! is it a peterbuilt diesel? how far back does smog dig in seaweed eatin, palm-tree huggin', winoesville cali.? tell the hippies you're goin' .30 over, and you'll still put out less co2 than the bug vans they live out of
You can put in any engine that was an option for the the year of truck, or newer, just needs to have smog that would be on engine for that year. I have a 77 F150 4x4,, has 351Measly,,, I could put in the 1978 460 I have from a van, as long as I have the emissions for that engine... since it was in an E250, all it has is an EGR valve like my 351Measly, no cats, I would check with a local smog commie first. What emission crap does your 360 have? You could just get a 390, and use the 360s valve covers if they have the emissions crap on them,,,

Boy howdy aint that the friggin truth, and you wanna know somethin even funnier,,, I just had my 77 smogged,,, Oh it's "ALL THERE" however, if the smog guy would have looked REALLY close, he would see that all the hoses that go to the EGR valve, the vacuum enhancer, air cleaner, all wind about themselves and do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! And it runs cleaner than ANY of the previous tests! It is one of the biggest scams and crocs o'***** there is, stupid smog crap. But I digress, where were we,,, oh yes, find a good 390, build it and drop it in, you can go with a 4bbl, just keep the ppwork that states it is CARB legal in the glovebox .

If you're going .30 or even .40 over there shouldn't be a problem. However, don't go over .60 over without getting the block sonic tested. Also If you bore it, you are more than likely going to have to convert it to a 390 since there is less aftermarkt support for the 360 than there is for the old Caddy engines.
I would personally make it a 390 and not tell the state...F em'....hell there's no difference in the outside appearance, the only thing that changes is the crank, rods and pistons....and yes you have to change all three or it could be met with disasterous results. The 390 has the short rod which measures 6.480 inches and the 360 has the short rod that measures 6.540. The pistons also have a different compression height so leaving the 360 pistons in would be bad juju.
The best resource for rebuilding one of these engines is How to rebuild Big Block Ford Engines by Steve Christ. I'm in the middle of a 390 rebuild and it has helped loads.
