Hi all. I have a 2000 F250, 4X4, 5.4L, LB, Ext. cab, 4.10 lim. slip rear-end, stock. It is nearing warranty expiration and it has a whine in the front-end when in 2 wheel drive (even worse in 4 high). It occurs loudest at around 60 mph, when letting off gas, then giving just enough gas to take the pressure off from deceleration.
I have it at the dealer for warranty repair. They have said it is the ring/pinion gear and Ford "really isn't concerned as long as it can't be heard over the radio." They said they can't hear over the radio. I always have the radio on and first heard it over that. I first noticed it about 15000 ago, and it has progessively worsened to now. They also said replacing it may make it worse.
Ironically, my dad (who retired from Ford) has an F150 2 wd in right now for the same problem in his rear-end. His (different dealer) replaced it. It was louder. They pulled a chart, put a decibel meter on it, said it exceeded X decibels at X mph still. Called Ford engineers, who said replace entire axle.
My dealer says doesn't know of any chart or decibel meter and that this really isn't bad and probably won't worsen and even if it does when out of warranty, it's documented so it can be taken care of later. Dad's dealer said once warranty is up, they don't HAVE to do anything even if documented.
My feeling is, it has progressively worsened till now, why should I believe it will suddenly hold steady and not get any worse? Am I making too big a deal out of this? Sorry for the length, and thanks for any replies. Kevin
yep, you have a bad front diff. hopefully you have seen my previous post about my problems with my rear diff. but a whine noyse is a whine noyse don`t care where it comes from,i would be nice and talk to the service manager and express your concern about your situacion, or i would try to get a second opinion from another dealer.just remember is not good to put new parts on a contaminated housing, and if you think you did your best, and talked to everybody at the dealers ,and they decide not to put a new diff. assembly at least have them clean that housing very good with brake cleaner or something. Iwould feel much better if that was my last choice. hope everything works out for you. keep us posted. Mr truck. 2003 f250 sd 2wd 5.4l lariat crew cab ,some bass, Xm satellite radio, alpine stereo and two buccaneer flaggs at the back of my truck.
Oh, one last thing, I was told by the guy I'm dealing with at the dealership that he would talk to his boss Monday. His boss had the same problem. Replaced pinion, then axle. REALLY wishes he would have just left it alone, noise really not a problem.
Any other feedback would be great so I know what recourse if any I have come Monday. Thanks again. Kevin
all i can tell you is that is hard sometimes to shim a diff. and it has to be almost perfect after you are done with it ,sometimes they put them to tight and that`s not good but you can`t let them to loose because that`s bad also, just make sure they doit right, but believe me if there is noise, there is missaligned gears.
