Advice on buying 07,08 Expedition

Currently have a 2001 EB Expedtion with 150K. We will be upgrading to an 07,08. We became acustom to the heated seats, automatic ac front and back and need a 4x4. What should I watch out for. Most xlt,s I see do not have all the options we want. Some limiteds have some options and we like the mono chromatic look. EB's seem to have all the options but we are slighly turned off be the gold plastic moulding, its much thicker than our current version. Thanks for all replies.

check every single button and electronic feature

check every single panel for paint defects

otherwise enjoy. The EB's are great. They are essentially the Lariat models. The Limited gets all the goodies standards, and the KR gets everything + special leather.

Heated seats and temperature controlled AC/Heat are certainly available on the XLT. Just have to order the Limited Option. I ain't paying $5000 for those features, thank you!

all the 07+ Expy I have seen have the super duper trim pieces. i actually like them. You might find an XLT without it like a 97-02 model...but I haven't seen one yet

The A/C seats aren't worth the money IMO. They work when they feel like it, and I would rather have saved a few bucks than have them.

If you want heat/cold seats, you have to get Leather. Ford doesn't put the heat into cloth seats. So that kills every single XLT that is stock.

So now you are only able to look at EB, Limited, KR. The EB bridges the gap between XLT and Limited.

As far as rear A/C...all of them come with rear air. It just depends on the trim level if you get fancy controls or a simple twist ****...

Thanks for the tips !! Not so concerned with the AC seats but we ski and the wife likes the heated seats also helps her when her back is sore. We looked at a KR but a little to flashy for us to each their own I know they do appeal to many people. So I guess I will concentrate on EB and Limited. Any mechanical things to worry about ? On my 2001 I specifically stayed away from air suspension. I am looking at used obviously so anything that maybe a problem that crreps up on 3 or 4 yearold expeditions ?

Thanks again Everyone

I think the 07's and even some earlier 08's still had some spark plug issues. Not sure when the 08 date was that they finally resolved but i'm sure there are a few threads on the subject.

I found a good post that tylus sumed up the spark plug issue:

problem seemed to surface when Ford started using the PI heads. spark plugs ejected from the head due to insufficient threads in the head. repairs required either a heli-coil or insert...or a new head.

it's completely random and can happen to anyone. Some people never have it happen...and some poor *******s have it happen one after another

2004-2007(midyear)

4.6 3v

5.4 3v

spark plugs are a multiple piece design that is tack welded together. Ford also increased the threads inside the head to fix the blow-out issue...the nature of the 3v head made for an extremely small space where the plug penetrates the cylinder

carbon from the ignition process and unburnt fuel collects around the spark plug. this causes the spark plug to get caught. the tack weld breaks and the plug will come out in 2-3 pieces.

doesn't always happen...but it's a definite possibility

2008-current

4.6 3v

5.4 3v

in late 2007 Ford issued a redesigned head that went back to a traditional sparkplug.

motors built after Nov 2007 have the new design head. So if you are looking at a 2008 model Ford, you need to look at the drivers side head. it will have a build date sticker on there. You want one built after the revision was issued.

mechanically they are pretty darn solid.

the front end, t-case and motor are a direct swap from the 2003-2006 Expy and 2004-2008 F-150.

The rear end is a modified 9.75 independant suspension that is mostly the same as the 03-06 Expy...just slightly upgraded to handle the extra weight that the EL's brought to the table.

the 07+ introduced the 6 speed transmission. a very good transmission IMO. The early 07 and 08 models had older programming that caused some weird/hard shifting patterns. a subsequent PCM/TCM reflash has been issued that seems to fix this. Seems to be the only complaints I've seen about the tranny.

nothing really jumps out at me right now that you really need to be on the lookout for. the only thing I can think of is spark plugs. The 07's have that crappy design head/plug setup. But the tool to remove the broken plugs is only $100. So really a non-issue in my eyes.

think mainly the biggest thing to look out for is the prior owner themselves. with good maintenance habits, you should trouble free for quite some time.
not to mention these have a 3yr/36k bumper to bumper warranty

and

a 5yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty
