hey guys i need some help. got home from work n turned off the truck n as i was walking in noticed a squeek like sound coming from the enigne bay. so i pooped the hood n took off the air cleaner n there was smoke comming from there i bealive its called the CDR (newbe to diesels). so i grabed the mag light n took a look in there it looked all oily. was starting to thing maybe glowplugs are going bad? any suggtions? heres a pic of under the air cleaner (CDR correct me if im wrong) you can see thats its shiney n has oil there is this normal? also noticed this black wire just hanging n didnt see a place to plug it in to any ideas? pic is taken from looking from the fire wall.
I do know that that wire should be plugged in on the underside of your filter. Feel around under there and you will feel it. It is around the outside edge.
It wil always be somewhat oily in the intake, has nothing to do with your glowplugs. When was the last time you serviced or replaced your cdr valve.
I see you have deleated the aluminum bottom type water filter and used s one piece one, I assume that wire went to it, but I'm not sure as mine didn't have it.
In the factory aluminum sediment bowl Star mentioned there is a water sensor, depending on the type of replacement filter you get the sensor can or cannot be transferred to it, as in some filters have a port for the sensor and some do not. The funniest ting I've seen is on a truck in the junkyard, they replaced the filter with a brand new one that has the sensor port, but they never transferred sensor from the bowl to the new filter, they ust left the rubber plug in the sensor hole! How did that stay in there without blowing out, I have no idea, there's good 4-6 psi of pressure in there so I guess they were really really really lucky... I'd suggest that you pull the filter and flip it upside down and see what the bottom looks like, you may not have the sensor in it at all (which means your water in fuel light will not work and you have to periodically drain the separator with that turn-**** on the bottom of it, which is a good idea anyways) - it would also make for a good opportunity to flush the IP with some cleaner like SeaFoam or Diesel Kleen, for this you need to fill the filter with the cleaner and not fuel before you reinstall it.
does anybody know why it would be smoking from out of from where the airfilter is?

i never serviced the cdr valve, i just bought the truck last month it also is my first diesel. n not sure exaclty what the cdr is. guessing that screen type thing under the air filter.? also guessing cleaning it with gas.

okay ill look at it, about how far do i fill it when putting the cleaner in the filter?

the smoking is normal it is blow by sucked back into the engine to be reburnt and the filter fill it all the way to the top with the cleaner the cdr is the tuna can looking thing behind the hole with the screen in the pic up top
Fill the filter comepletely full, this is best done after the engine has run enough to reach operating temp.
The cdr is the tuna can looking thing behind your air cleaner, it does the same job as the pcv valve on a gas motor.
What he said - fuel filter is always filled to the top, if you're careful reinstalling it and have a steady hand you won't spill pretty much any of it in the process.
The CRD is held to the back of the intake by two bolts that take 1/2" or 9/16" socket, remove them and push the CDR should pull right up - may be stubborn if the hose on the bottom is nice and tight, but it will eventually come out.

DO NOT POUR GAS INTO THE SCREEN TYPE THING!!!!!
Not unless you want a new truck, then go ahead.
to clean the CDR, take it off and put in a pail with some gas in it and let it sit for a while, occasionally shaking it around. Let it air dry, and reinstall. Do not use compressed air to dry the CDR.
Personally i think cleaning the CDR is bad luck. I hit a tree the same day i cleaned mine lol
