So my original gas gauge was broke, it never turned over just stayed in one position...empty. Went to a jy and bought myself another poped her in...when I start the engine it goes all the way over to full (When I know its not). When I turn the key into accessory it also runs to full. My sending unit is brand new, its pretty frustrating driving around without a working gas gauge. Where do I go from here? All other gauges seem to be working fine, however; my temperature gauge seemed to stay in the cold position for a 30 minute drive (highway). Any suggestions?
Take the wire off the sending unit. Turn the key to run with the engine off, and ground the sending unit wire. The fuel gauge should be full scale full or empty. Then take the sending unit wire at the tank off ground, and let it hang in the air. The gauge should swing full scale the opposite way. If this works, then you know the wiring and the gauge are good, and there is still something wrong with the sending unit.
Make sure your sending unit is grounded properly also. You can test this by doing the above gauge test with the ground on the sending unit, and then use a good ground off the frame. If the gauge swings back and forth with the frame ground and not the sending unit ground, then you know there is something wrong with the ground to the sending unit.
