Deep Cycle Batteries

Hi,
I just picked up a couple of deep charge batts for my RV (which is definitely for sale because I don't use it).

Anyway, one read 12.65 and the other read 12.5 -- so I charged that one up. They both read 12.65 now.

My question is the water level. I pulled the caps, and the water is covering the plates, but that's all. I normally fill batteries to whatever indicator is available. In this case, there seem to be slots going partway up the fill tube.

My intention is to fill them to this level, and then check the charge again. I assume that it will drop due to the dilution. Is this a good idea?
(and for once I'll probably use distilled water)

Thanks,

I always use distilled water, and yes, fill them to the bottom of those slotted tubes. Think about using a float charger or solar charger to keep them charged. Regular chargers will cause them to boil off water becausse of different chemistry compared to "low maintenance" starting batteries, which will also cause them to self-discharge over time. While they will withstand deep discharges, but leaving them that way does kill them.

As long as the plates are completely covered, there is enough water in the battery.

Think of that point as the "minimum required".

I usually fill the cells until the water enters the bottom of the hole and resemble "eyes"......If they are on constant trickle charge as in most hooked up to shore power motorhomes, check the water level every other week.
