Question Horn

I replaced my dual horn on my 1990 F-150. I also put in a new horn relay located by the glove compartment. The fuse is the same as the cigarette lighter and that works. WHY DOESN'T MY HORN WORK??? HELP!!! I need to get through inspection.

Did you test the new horn by putting power straight to it? Test the relay's output for voltage when the button is pressed. Do you have cruise?

Horn

I do have cruise control. Does that mean anything. The horns are good. The relay still makes a click noise when I press the horn. Any ideas ?

Check that the horn has got a good ground

Unhappy Horn

All connections clean w/220gr sand paper. The horn relay & horn are new and working and the fuse that works the lighter & horn works. Is there any other in-line fuse or something else that could cause the horn not to work? The wiring is all in good shape. I need to get this truck thru inspection. Anybody out there that can help???

How do you know the new horn is good? Put a test light on the relay output terminal to see if it's passing current when you press the button.

Unhappy Horn

I have a test light connected to the horn and I can't get any power there. I have power at the new relay. Fuse is good. Are there any other reasons this is not getting power out to the horn?

If you have power TO the relay, but not FROM it, then either the trigger circuit (to the horn button) is bad, or the relay is bad. Short the trigger terminal to ground & see.

Horn

What is the "trigger Circuit" ? From the horn on the steering column to the relay must be OK. When I press the horn it clicks. Where can I find this trigger circuit?

There's a very good wiring diagram in the Haynes manual that shows this circuit. The horn button (thru the steering wheel wiper contact) grounds the relay's coil, which energizes the relay. That causes the relay to connect the horn terminal to the hot terminal. Either your horn button isn't grounding the relay's coil (but you're hearing the relay click so that's probably not your problem), or the relay is bad (if it clicks but doesn't complete the circuit). You can be sure if you jump power from the hot terminal straight to the horn terminal and the horns blow - if they don't, then the horns or that wire is bad.
