Really Need Help Guys....

Hey Everyone,

Looking to purchase a used F350 for tow duty. From what I have been reading on this forum, I am scared to death of buying a PSD 6.0 due to the issues they have.
I have been a die hard, true blue Ford man for the past 25 years, so when it comes to trucks, none other exist for me, however.....
I have my eye on a 2003 PSD dually. 95k miles. Has everything I want.
Ran the OASIS report on it and got the following:
Aside from the PCM updates installed it has had the following work done.

40k - front cover and rear main
42k - replaced gerotor pump, suspect fouled up during front seal install
48k - all 8 injectors replaced
58k - oil and egr cooler replaced

That leaves a lot of the small things out but you get the idea.

After 60k, it fell off the face of the earth, (warranty ran out I suppose).

The question is, in my eyes, some of the larger ticket items have already
been addressed. The only unknown is that with the oil cooler and egr cooler issues, could the head gaskets be suspect?

If so, what is the easiest way to check? (coolant sample test?)

If the head gaskets check out, do you think it worth pursuing seeing the amount of work it had in the past?

If not this truck, how can I calm myself and look realistically at another 6.0 truck?

My issue is I'm under pressure and cannot spend a lot of money or time chasing gremlins down in the first span of ownership.

Give a brother some advise and help me remain "true blue"

Thanks,

Randy

I was also apprehensive about my truck due to mixed reviews of the 6.0L, however after finding a truck that met all of my criteria I have been very happy with my purchase. In my opinion one of the most important things you can do before buying a truck with the 6.0L is spend lots on time on FTE to better understand what makes this engine run like a top and what makes it spend time in the shop. If you understand this engine platform and know what to look for and what to avoid when making your purchase the odds of getting a truck that will serve you well for years to come will increase exponentially.

If you haven't already spend some time reading the posts in the tech folder. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/303583-6-0l-diesel-tech-folder.html<O</O
<O</O

Follows are some general recommendations:

<O</O
  • Get an Oasis report and CarFax report - if either points to a history of mechanical problems walk away<O</O
  • Check for coolant puking<O</O
  • Look for a truck with no aftermarket performance modifications<O</O
  • Try to find out as much as possible about the routine maintenance and compare the history to the Ford recommendations - routine maintenance is the key to long term reliability<O</O
  • Try to get a model with at least some of the 5 yr / 100K warranty - this gives you some risk insurance and also the option to purchase a ESP<O</O
  • Check out post #22 of the following thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/87...uy-6-oh-2.html<O</O

No matter what you do just plan on issues popping up. And I just bought a 6.0 and did maintenance on the whole truck. From the coolant to the rear diff. Now I have a base line. I suggest you do the same.

Can't tell you much about what to expect because I have 192k on my '03, and I am just beginning to have "serious" issues. But with the help of all the good people on this site, I am getting through them. In my opinion, the 6.0 is a real good engine. At least it has been for me. Of course mine is bone stock and I don't/haven't abused it, I'm sure this has added to or at least helped out the life of the engine. There are people here who can and will give you good solid advice.
