Rear disk brakes?

I have an 80 F-250 and i was just curious, would it be a good idea to put disk brakes on the back? Or is it just a waste of time? How much of a project would it be to put them on?

Thanks in advanced.

I think it's a great idea! In theory only...

I have an 81 F350 (Dana 60) 4x4 that I use mainly as a work truck for hauling firewood and
had the same thoughts as you. I'm sure the axles are out there someplace with disc brakes
on 'em and I suspect it'd be doable to convert an 80s-vintage truck BUT you'd need to:
  1. Devise something for parking brakes
  2. Get the correct metering (proportioning) valve
  3. Figure out how to deal with the ABS stuff
  4. Whatever else I've forgotten to mention
The front does most of the braking action; although the idea of rear disc brakes sounds cool,
I doubt they'll ever materialize on my truck - too much work & hassle & money for me.

They do make kits for rear disc conversion for 5 bolt rear ends, not sure about the 8 lug. I personally like drums better as they have more braking surface. And the only real issue with them is brake fade. That can be easily fixed by cross drilling the drums, which you can do with a drill press or get done at a machine shop for $40-60. Just in my experience my 4 drum cars stop alot faster than the 4 disc brake cars.
