While powder coating is great, for those of you that dont have someone close by that does it, or dont want your truck down for a few days, the key to painting is the prep.
Wear gloves, After removing your pipes, clean them with a non-residue, solvent based cleaner, use a scotch brite pad while you are cleaning them, prime with a chromate based primer, use 3 or 4 coats of primer, it helps to fill in imperfections in the metal. Use a high quality spray paint, not the $.99 a can special at the hardware store. Take your time, You are going to need about 4 to 5 coats of paint on top of the primer. While the primer dries and is recoatable in 5 minutes, the paint will take up to an hour between coats. Follow the directions on the paint cans, if its 50* outside, and the metal is cold, paint is not going to adhere as well as if it was 80 and the metal was warm.
